I don’t know how I missed this 2016 mockumentary starring Andy Samberg. I hadn’t even heard of it, somehow. And if you haven’t either, you should watch it.
At first glance it’s really dumb. And at second glance, it’s also really dumb, but like that really funny kind of dumb.
It’s like Hot Rod, which I actually love though many find it too random (only 64% on Rotten Tomatoes), but with more plot and much less randomness. Though to be fair, Popstar only has 64% on Rotten Tomatoes, too, but only because I only go by audience score. The critic score is higher.
Samberg is Conner Friel, a previous member of a popular rap threesome, The Style Boyz, who’s recently gone solo, but doesn’t have a clue how to make good music without his group. But the music he does make, is hilariously terrible. Also, every publicity stunt he attempts to increase his popularity fails terribly — especially the one with his girlfriend, Seal and wolves.
Of course there’s a positive message of nurturing friendships despite stardom, but you’re not going to watch it for that. Watch it for the stupidity, and you won’t be disappointed.
