Wednesday is the best show I’ve seen this year. I liked it so much, I watched all 8 episodes on a weekday, after an 8-hour workday, which means I was up until about 1 a.m. (2 hours past my bedtime).
The first four episodes were perfection — especially the scene where Wednesday plays “Painted Black” on the violin — but when episode four started, there was a clumsy shift in style I didn’t like. I googled my guessed explanation and I was right: Tim Burton only directed the first four episodes, which is a shame. Whoever took the helm did okay but didn’t have the same feel, since it’s impossible to have the same feel as Burton, and I hope he directs all the rest of the episodes, or they won’t be as good. Despite the director whiplash, the acting is stellar from lead Jenna Ortega, which I did not expect to admit after how much I loved Christina Ricci as the character in past, though she’s still in the show…
So Nevermore is like Hogwarts, except it’s darker like Brakebills of The Magicians (without killing a cat in gruesome ways every episode for no apparent reason — why my husband and I stopped watching…). The show pulls from the old series in fun ways (just look for the “snap snap”) and the casting is really stellar overall, like Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia and Fred Armisen as Uncle Fester. But the Gomez casting is not right. Though Luis Guzmán is hilarious, he’s not the level of dashing you expect from Gomez, and I maintain the best Gomez ever is Raul Julia. Though I’m shocked not to be saying that about Christina Ricci. I actually think the best Wednesday is now Jenna Ortega. (I mean, just the weird, yet confident, dancing alone…)
What do you think, dear reader? Is Jenna Ortega or Christina Ricci the best Wednesday?
