Now and Then All Over Again
If you’ve read Chickster before, you probably know that we have some major love for the Alamo Drafthouse. It’s not just a crush. We’re talking true soulmate love.
And I fell head over heels again when I found out the March selection for their monthly Girlie Night signature series was none other than Now and Then, my absolute favorite movie when I was 12.
I mean, not only did it star Wednesday Addams and the girl from Hocus Pocus but also none other than one of the hottest Tiger Beat pin-ups of 1994–1995, Devon Sawa. (In the interest of full disclosure, my 12th birthday party may or may not have involved me and a giggling group of my friends watching Little Giants repeatedly to freeze frame on Devon Sawa’s football pant-clad bum.) Seriously, I remember much anticipation leading up to Now and Then‘s release, including a Seventeen magazine spread that compared photos of the younger actresses (Gaby Hoffman, Christina Ricci, Thora Birch, Ashleigh Aston Moore) to the yearbook photos of the actresses who played their older selves (respectively, Demi Moore, Rosie O’Donnell [WTF, right?], Melanie Griffith, Rita Wilson).
Anyway, with its awesome ’70s soundtrack (“Knock three times on the ceiling if you wa-ant me…”), creepy but ultimately sweet ghost story, first kisses, cool clothes, girl power and preteen angst, not to mention Teeny’s tip to stuff your bra with pudding-filled balloons, Now and Then should be a right of passage for every 12-year-old girl, just like reading Judy Blume.
So if you’re free tonight, stop by the Alamo Drafthouse Ritz for the special Girlie Night (hosted by the adorable Sarah Pitre) presentation of Now and Then.
